We support the view that a crucial approach to confidence and success in English is one that offers a variety of learning experiences for the pupils. Where possible we aim to actively engage the pupils by means of encouraging discussion, sharing ideas and including practical activities to support and develop the particular issues or skills we are addressing that half term. Our aim is to create a friendly department that encourages all pupils to have a go, to reflect on what they’ve achieved and, most importantly, to be confident in their lessons.
Each half term the pupils are taught by means of a themed approach that we hope will have some reflection on the issues and ideas that interest our young people. The themes are:
The Natural World/ Wildlife
Role Models/ Fame
Food and Health
Horror and the Paranormal
Space and Extreme Sports
Travel and Adventure
Within each theme we will be looking at the skills needed to improve our writing and our responses to other people’s writing. We will be reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts and writing for a range of different audiences and purposes.
Each half term the pupils’ work will be assessed to determine how much progress they have made. Our marking, verbal feedback, peer and self-assessment ensure that the pupils are made fully aware of their skills and abilities and their weaknesses. Each pupil will be given clear guidance on how to improve their work so that they know exactly what they need to do in order to make progress and develop their confidence as readers and writers.
